Exercise, where do I start?

Exercise is fundamental to a human being’s life. If anyone wants to live for longer, or just to enjoy their life as it stands, regular exercise should be a big part of their lifestyle. However, some people spend years without exercising and then feel that they don’t know where to start when exercise becomes an urgent matter. This is especially true for people of a certain age, who have been out of the exercise routine for a number of years, and then realise that they don’t know where to begin. The best thing you can do in this regard is follow some of the ideas that are outlined in this article. We hope they give you some inspiration to switch up your exercise routine, and if you have just started after a long period of inactivity, to make it easier for you to make that fresh beginning.

Start small, end big

Often, exercise is about starting small. So if you haven’t exercised for a long time, start small in every way. One of the best ways to do this is to walk around a lot more than you used to. Ditch the car if you can, and walk to work. Alternatively, take every opportunity to use the stairs when normally you would use the lift. It’s small changes like this that will increase your heart rate in a manageable way, without causing you distress. It will also get your body a bit more conditioned and ready for more moderate exercise. Start small in such a way and you will then find that as you put your body through more stress and strain with moderate exercise it isn’t as painful as you might expect.

Another key tip revolves around your lunch. If at work, you find that you eat your lunch at your desk, schedule in some time to take a 10-minute walk before you eat. This will get your heart pumping and ensure that you have a healthy lunch. After eating lunch, it is very difficult to get up and move around. So schedule in that 10 or 20 minutes before you have your lunch, and you get the exercise out of the way without any major stress.

Turn that TV off

Finally, turn the TV off. Most people spend their evenings and weekends in front of the television. However, people are realising that you can use that time for physical activity. Start a Pilates class, for example, or find a group where you can enjoy some light swimming. Doing this instead of sitting in front of the TV is excellent news for you and your body. Even if you have not exercised for a long time, you are naturally making gains by getting off the sofa and going out and taking part in some light exercise. It really cannot be over exaggerated how this can make such a big difference to your life. Think about how you can get off the sofa by enjoying a light exercise group. There are plenty in the local newspaper, as well as online.
